LOS ANGELES ― Dodgers manager Dave Roberts singled out center fielder Chris Taylor and right fielder Zach McKinstry as being “cut from the same cloth.”

Neither player is a star. They are versatile defenders who “just want to play,” Roberts said. Certainly, Taylor and McKinstry aren’t easily confused for the players they were replacing in the field Saturday ― Cody Bellinger and Mookie Betts, the two former Most Valuable Players who are sidelined with injuries.

The replacements came through. A two-run single by McKinstry, followed by a three-run home run by Taylor, gave the Dodgers (7-2) an early lead en route to a 9-5 win over the Washington Nationals (1-4).

“It’s just that next-man-up mindset,” Roberts said. “You have a couple talented players down. One’s on IL. Mookie’s not playing right now. Guys pick each other up. Credit goes to the coaches and those players.”

The Dodgers have groomed McKinstry, a former 33rd-round draft pick, for a similar utility role as the veteran Taylor. Both were middle infielders in college. Now, they’re liable to be found anywhere other than catcher.

With Bellinger and Betts banged up, the Dodgers need their utility players in the outfield. McKinstry had a shaky moment Friday when he toppled over the right field half-wall and landed on concrete in pursuit of a foul ball. Since then, he said, his confidence in the field has only grown.

“I’m getting more accustomed to the outfield,” McKinstry said. “Every day is a different journey.”

McKinstry helped Dodgers starter Julio Urías (2-0) with his arm and his glove Saturday.

With runners on first and third base in the first inning, Starlin Castro hit a bloop single into right field. Juan Soto scored on the play, but McKinstry threw out Ryan Zimmerman at third base to end the inning. It was the first outfield assist of McKinstry’s career.

In the bottom of the second, McKinstry lined a single between first and second base with the bases loaded. Two runs scored to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. The next batter, Taylor, pummeled a high fastball from left-hander Patrick Corbin (0-2) over the fence in left-center field, where it landed 429 feet from home plate. The three-run home run was Taylor’s first of the season.

“I look up to CT,” McKinstry said. “He’s a great teammate. He talks to me a lot about the game. Last year in summer camp, when we were walking out of the stadium he said, ‘Stay with it, you’re going to be facing good pitchers in the future.’

“He’s a great role model to watch every day he’s in the lineup.”

Their admiration is mutual.

“We’re each our own player,” Taylor said. “He’s a great player. Honestly I take (‘cut from the same cloth’) as a compliment to myself. He puts great at-bats together. We’re just seeing the beginning.”

Pitching in front of fans at Dodger Stadium for the first time since Game 2 of the 2019 National League Division Series, Urías held the Nationals at bay for the better part of 5 2/3 innings. He scattered nine hits, including the first of two home runs by Soto. The left-hander struck out only three hitters, surviving a battery of hard contact early before retiring 11 batters in a row.

Urías has not been on the losing end of a decision ― regular season or postseason ― since the beginning of last year.

Justin Turner went 2 for 4 with two doubles. He’s batting .424 through his first eight games. Max Muncy went 2 for 2 with a pair of walks. AJ Pollock hit a bases-loaded double in the seventh inning, driving in three runs.

The Dodgers were out-hit, 15 to 9, but drew seven walks. Jimmy Nelson, Dennis Santana and Scott Alexander did not allow a run until the bottom of the ninth inning. Trea Turner was initially called out at first base by umpire Adrian Johnson on the back end of a double play, apparently ending the game, but the call was overturned on review.

That extended the game for Soto to bat against Alexander. Down to his final strike, the slugger clubbed a two-run home run to right field, providing the final score.

The Dodgers will send Clayton Kershaw to the mound Sunday to face Max Scherzer with a possible series sweep on the line.

Roberts said Betts will be held out of the starting lineup for a fourth consecutive game with a stiff back. Edwin Rios will start in right field, and McKinstry will shift to left, giving the Dodgers a pair of left-handed bats against the veteran right-hander Scherzer.
