COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Police are hoping witnesses can come following an unsettling crash off Pikes Peak Highway this week.
The crash happened on Tuesday just before 11 in the morning. Police received a report of a vehicle that went off the roadway and crashed above tree line right below Devil’s Playground. Police tell 11 News it is believed the man behind the wheel intentionally drove through the gates at the bottom of the mountain before the crash.
An 11 News crew was at the scene soon after the crash happened. The driver had to be taken by helicopter to the hospital.
The driver was identified as 37-year-old Nathaniel Phillips. Phillips was taken into custody on outstanding felony warrants, not tied to the crash.
