Rams come up short against Greater Lawrence - Lowell Sun

ANDOVER — Offense was hard to come by for both teams in Friday’s CAC clash between Shawsheen Tech and Greater Lawrence, but the Reggies were able to muster just enough to come away with a 15-7 victory over the Rams.

Greater Lawrence (2-2) got touchdown runs from senior running backs Tiago Fernandes and Amauris Gomez on their way to the victory, while Shawsheen turned the ball over three times in the game, with their only score coming on a fourth quarter touchdown pass from senior quarterback Chris Disciscio to senior wide receiver Pete Caniff.

Both teams got outstanding defensive performances, including one sequence in the first quarter when they traded interceptions, with Syrus Almanzar picking off a pass for the Reggies, only to have Shawsheen respond with an interception by junior Dylan Timmons.

Neither team could do much with their turnovers, but Greater Lawrence finally broke the scoreless tie when Fernandes had a seven-yard run up the middle for a touchdown with 3:40 left in the half. The Reggies then faked the extra-point kick and Rene Lopez ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Shawsheen got a big return on the ensuing kickoff from junior Shane Costello, that coupled with a 15-yard penalty against Greater Lawrence gave them the ball at the Reggies’ 31-yard line. But they were unable to take advantage of the great field position, turning the ball over on downs and going to halfrime with Greater Lawrence holding the 8-0 advantage.

Greater Lawrence had a first-and-goal at the five early in the third, but on third-and-goal from the one, the Rams forced a fumble and Costello recovered.

On their next possession, the Reggies did increase their lead behind the running quarterback Gustavo Regalado and running back Amauris Gomez, with Gomez capping the six-play drive with a 12-yard TD run that made the score 15-0 after Regalado’s extra point with 8:40 left.

A 45-yard run by senior running back Diondre Turner gave the Rams a first down at the Reggies’ 12-yard line, and four plays later, Disciscio connected with Caniff for a one-yard touchdown pass with 5:08 left in the game. Randy Leavitt’s extra point pulled the Rams within 15-7.

The Reggies proceeded to go on a clock killing drive, once again behind the running of Regalado and Gomez, not returning the ball to Shawsheen until just eight seconds remained in the game.
