Spartans Come Back For Wild 10-7 Victory For MSU - Michigan State Athletics

MINNEAPOLIS -- After being down 7-0 and no-hit through five innings, Michigan State baseball rallied for an amazing comeback 10-7 Victory for MSU over Minnesota Sunday at Siebert Field.

Michigan State scored a run in the sixth, three in the seventh and then six runs in the eighth to not just come all way the back, but take the lead. Meanwhile, the Spartan relief pitching shutdown the Gopher bats in the later half of the game, as sophomore reliever Wyatt Rush earned his first win at Michigan State and junior infielder/pitcher Zach Iverson earned the save.

Sunday's win was the Spartans' second come-from-behind victory in the series, after bouncing back from down 5-1 after five frames and 6-5 after the seventh inning for a 7-6 win Friday night. In Saturday's game, Michigan State rallied from being down 7-3 after five innings with two runs in the sixth and four in the top of the ninth for a 9-7 lead, but Minnesota countered with a three-run ninth inning, winning on a walk-off single.

"Their pitcher Schoeberl was rolling, his stuff was really good. We knew from the past that he sometimes has had a hard time finding the strike zone but he was pretty locked in today, his fastball had some life and his change-up was really good and throwing it for strikes," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I told the guys after the game that they probably handle that stuff better than I do because I give them a lot of credit being down seven to nothing and we just keep coming, and like we've said the last two days, games are 27 outs long and these guys just keep competing and competing, and had a couple good innings there late and fortunately took advantage of some opportunities for us."

The Spartans drew three-straight bases-loaded walks in the eighth inning to cap the comeback, part of a solid performance at the plate all day by MSU.

"We didn't chase many pitches either, we walked seven times and that contributed to us taking the lead, but at the same time, we didn't chase many pitches out of the strike zone so I thought we had a pretty good approach," Boss said. "As the game continued to wear on, I think we kept a good approach, and we hit balls hard early and just didn't have anything to show for it and sometimes that can be frustrating for guys, but these two guys just kept plugging away.

The triumph on Sunday clinched the series for MSU, the Spartans' first series win over the Gophers since 2014 at Minneapolis.

With the series win, Michigan State leveled its record at 9-9, while Minnesota slid to 4-14.

Iverson was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored at the plate, before taking over on the mound and pitched the final 1.1 IP to earn the save, his team-leading fourth of the season.

Freshman infielder Mitch Jebb was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while freshman infielder Brock Vradenburg was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Senior outfielder Joe Stewart was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore outfielder Zaid Walker was 1-for-5 and a run scored. Freshman infielder Trent Farquhar had two RBI and a run scored, with two walks, while senior outfielder Bryce Kelley also had two walks and an RBI, both coming on back-to-back at bats drawing bases loaded walks to put MSU ahead with a six-run eighth inning and going ahead, 10-7.

The home team Gophers bolted out of the gates with a three-run first inning and added to more in the second for a 5-0 advantage and tacked on two more in the fifth for a 7-0 lead. Meanwhile, Minnesota starting pitcher Trent Schoeberl had no-hit the Spartans, only allowing a walk and hit-by-pitch, both in the fourth.

Vradenburg broke up the no-hitter with a double to left center to lead off the sixth. After Vradenburg moved up to third on a flyout by junior catcher Adam Proctor, Farquhar flied out to left for a sacrifice fly to plate Vradenburg and put MSU on the board at 7-1.

In the top of the seventh, Stewart led off with a single followed by freshman designated hitter Jack Frank reaching on an error, then Jebb doubled to left to plate Stewart. Iverson was up next and smacked a single to center to drive in Jebb and Frank and pull MSU within, 7-4.

Farquhar started things off in the eighth with a leadoff walk, and later moved around to third, where Stewart drove him in with a sac fly. Walker singled and Frank walked, then Jebb singled up the middle to score Walker and pull the Spartans within a run at 7-6. After Minnesota's second pitching change of the inning, Iverson singled to left to plate Frank and knot up the score at 7-7. After Jebb and Iverson moved up a base on a wild pitch, Vradenburg was intentionally walked to load the bases full of Spartans. Redshirt-freshman catcher Gabe Sotres then drew the first of three RBI bases-loaded walks in a row for an 8-7 MSU lead, then after another Gopher pitching change, Farquhar and Kelley drew their RBI walks and the Spartans had a 10-7.

Rush came on in relief in the fifth in relief of freshman starter Nick Powers, who went 4.1 IP, striking out four. Rush grounded the Gopher bats, yielding just one hit and now runs in 3.1 innings, earning his first win as a Spartan.

After Rush got the first two outs of the bottom of the eighth, yielding a single and walk around the second out, and MSU brought in Iverson to pitch from third. Iverson induced a flyout to end the frame and thwart the Gopher threat.

In the ninth, MSU was unable to pad its lead, going down in order. Iverson yielded a leadoff single to start the bottom of the ninth, but then got a double play, then a foulout to end the game and seal the Victory for MSU.
