Vikings Out-Hit Bears But Come Up Short In Greeley - Portland State Vikings

GREELEY, Colo. – The Portland State softball team tallied 23 hits in its doubleheader on Friday but was unable to pull off wins over Northern Colorado, falling 6-3 in game one and 10-7 in game two.

Getting the start to open the day for Portland State was freshman Allicitie Frost. Frost gave up three earned runs in 3.1 innings of work as UNC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

The Vikings tied things up in the fourth with a pair of RBI from Paetynn Lopez and Marissa Bruno. Forcing a Viking pitching change and retaking the lead in the fourth, Northern Colorado brought in two runs off three hits to lock in a 4-2 lead.

The Bears put two more runs on the board in the sixth before holding the Vikings to just two hits and one run in the top of the seventh to secure the 6-3 victory.

The PSU defense had an uncharacteristic performance in the field, recording three errors through seven innings. Frost took the loss in the circle despite the Bears facing four different Viking pitchers in the contest.

Portland State out-hit the Bears 12-9 while leaving 13 runners on base in the opening game. Maddie Thompson led the efforts with three hits while Tayler Gunesch and Bruno each added two.

Game two began with all momentum on the side of the Bears. Northern Colorado used a grand slam in the second inning and a five-run fourth inning to jump out to a 9-0 lead.

Facing a run-rule threat, PSU came alive in the fifth when Olivia Dean, Bruno, and Thompson strung together a series of RBI to pull the Vikings within six.

Dean and Bruno struck once again in the sixth to put the Vikings right back in contention at 9-6.

The Bears increased their lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth before they limited the Vikings to just a single run in the final frame, clinching the win (10-7).

Game two starter, Katie Schroeder took the loss for Portland State. Replacing the redshirt senior in the fourth inning, Marisol Gaona allowed two earned runs in her 2.2 innings of work.

PSU matched the Bears offensively as they each tallied 11 hits. Bruno led the way, going 3-4 at the plate with two RBI while Dean was 2-3 with 3 RBI. Lopez and Emily Johansen also notched multi-hit games for the Vikings.

PSU will take on the Bears in the final game of the series on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT.
