Minors: Josh Mears runs wild as Storm come back to win - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Josh Mears’ double-plus power turned heads this spring.

Believe it or not, he can run, too.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound outfielder swiped second, third and home in the sixth inning Tuesday night and low Single-A Lake Elsinore came from behind for an 8-7 win over host San Jose.

The steals upped Mears’ total to six on the season.

After singling in the sixth inning, Mears swiped second base. He took third on Euribiel Angelels’ one-out walk and went home on a double-steal.

The 20-year-old Mears is ranked ninth in the Padres’ system by MLB.com.

He has an .811 OPS, a .255 batting average and one homer through his first 15 games with Lake Elsinore (.797 OPS), quite the jump for a 2019 second-rounder who had not played above rookie ball before this month.

At least outside a few cameos in Cactus League, which included a viral, monster home run off Rockies big-league reliever Carlos Estevez that left the bat at 117.3 mph.

The Padres have known for quite some time that there’s more than pure power to Mears’ game.

“He’s really big, really strong, but he’s in really good shape,” Padres senior farm director Sam Geaney said last month. “He’s a good mover. It’s not just brute-force strength. When he runs, when he gets going, it’s beautiful.”

Beautiful enough for the Padres to even give Mears some run in center field, where he played Tuesday despite his long-term profile fitting best at one of the corners.

The power would certainly play there, too, if the Padres can continue to unlock an emerging hit tool that’s buoyed by a solid feel for the strike zone. He’s struck out 25 times against seven walks so far with the Storm, but walked 23 times and hit .313/.405/.531 over the final month of the season in rookie ball in 2019.

“The is not an undisciplined, chasing hitter,” Geaney said. “He swings at the right stuff. It’s continuing to be cognizant of how his body and how his swing work together to hopefully allow for the appropriate amount of contact as he climbs the ladder.”

Angeles (.811 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits and two walks and Jarryd Dale (.877 OPS) doubled in two runs.

Zack Mathis (.774) also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Right-hander Dwayne Matos (2.08) allowed three runs in four innings in the start.

Robert Hassell III was not in the lineup for the Storm (10-9).

The Chihuahuas have lost six in a row after winning six in a row.

LF Esteury Ruiz (.646 OPS) doubled in a run and RF Jack Suwinski (.800 OPS) doubled twice, drove in a run, walked and scored twice. SS CJ Abrams was again out of the lineup with an ankle injury. He is day-to-day.

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (7-11)

  • South Bend 12, TinCaps 10: RF Agustin Ruiz (.753 OPS) hit his system-best fifth homer, drove in two runs and doubled during a 2-for-6 effort that lifted a sagging batting average to .194. SS Justin Lopez (.593 OPS) drove in three runs on his second homer and 3B Ethan Skender (.757 OPS) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. CF Reinaldo Ilarraza (.674 OPS) and DH Dwanya Williams-Sutton (.983 OPS) both walked three times. Williams-Sutton also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. RHP Gabe Mosser (2.08) struck out five over five shutout innings of one-run ball before a bullpen implosion. LHP Cody Tyler (16.76) allowed six runs in two-thirds of an inning and RHP Carter Loewen (11.12) allowed five runs in one-third of an inning.

Notable

  • LHP Sam Williams was transferred from San Antonio to Fort Wayne and RHP Felix Minjarez was transferred from Fort Wayne to Lake Elsinore.
