Rochester, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Mets dropped a Thursday afternoon matchup against the Rochester Red Wings, 9-8, at Frontier Field.
The game featured three ties and three lead changes.
Syracuse (5-16) scored in the top of the first inning for the second consecutive day. Mason Williams led off with a walk and moved to third base after back-to-back groundouts. David Thompson grounded a ball to Rochester shortstop Adrian Sanchez, who made an errant throw to first base, allowing Thompson to reach base safely and Williams to score for a 1-0 Mets lead.
Rochester (6-15) responded in the bottom of the first. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases to begin the frame. Daniel Palka worked a bases-loaded walk to bring home a run and tie the game, 1-1. Syracuse starting pitcher Akeem Bostick limited the damage, though, thanks to a double play that ended the inning.
Mets shortstop Cody Bohanek make a catch on a pop up in shallow left field and then threw out Adrian Sanchez, who was tagging up and trying to score from third, on a close play at the plate to end the inning.
In the second inning, the Red Wings took their first lead on a Sanchez single that scored two runs to make it 3-1 Rochester.
That score remained until the fourth where Syracuse scored two runs. Thompson led off with a triple and scored on a Quinn Brodey sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to one, 3-2. Bostick helped his own cause by ripping a single into center field to tie the game, 3-3. That was Bostick’s first professional hit in just his second career plate appearance.
The Mets regained the lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Brodey worked a walk. With Drew Jackson batting, Brodey stole second base. Jackson then tripled to the right-field corner, scoring Brodey to give Syracuse a 4-3 edge.
The tide changed in the bottom of the fifth. Red Wings slugger Carter Kieboom hit a fly ball high into the air to left field, but Mets left fielder Sebastian Elizalde lost the ball in the sun, and it dropped in for a double. It proved to cost Syracuse as Jake Noll hit a double to score Kieboom later in the inning, knotting the game, 4-4. That concluded Bostick’s Mets debut. After reliever Trey Cobb came out of the bullpen, the Red Wings used a Blake Swihart sac fly to regain the lead, 5-4.
In the sixth, Noll came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and belted a grand slam over the left-field wall to extend the Rochester lead to five, 9-4. Noll finished the day with a game-high five RBIs.
Syracuse pulled closer with a quick response in the seventh. With one out, Thompson singled. Brodey then drove in his second run of the game, tripling to right field to score Thompson and make it a 9-5 game.
Jackson followed with an RBI single to pull Syracuse within three, 9-6. A Dan Rizzie walk put runners at first and second. Cody Bohanek then blooped a ball into shallow right field for a hit. Red Wings first baseman Jake Noll fielded the ball and made an errant throw to second base that allowed Jackson to score on the play and cut Rochester’s advantage to two, 9-7.
After Drew Ferguson flied out for the second out, Williams hit a ball into left field that landed for a hit, scoring Rizzie from second base, but Bohanek was thrown out at the plate, preserving a one-run Rochester lead, 9-8.
The Mets were shut down in the final two innings by Red Wings reliever Justin Miller, who delivered two scoreless innings for Rochester, striking out four batters en route to his second save of the season.
The Mets and Red Wings return to the field on Friday for game four of a six-game series at Frontier Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
