Nevada basketball is a finalist for Milwaukee transfer Te'Jon Lucas, who began his career at Illinois.

Lucas is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard who played two seasons at both of his previous colleges. Last year, Lucas averaged 14.9 points, 5.8 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game on 39.2 percent shooting, including 27.5 percent from three. He made 73 percent of his free throws. It was the second straight season with double-figures points for Lucas, who averaged 14.6 points per game as a junior at Milwaukee, which plays in the Horizon League. The Panthers went 10-12 overall and 7-10 in conference.

Among the other finalists for Lucas are BYU, Utah, DePaul and New Mexico State.

Lucas played two seasons at Illinois, averaging 4.8 points as a freshman and 5.7 points as a sophomore. The Milwaukee native transferred to him hometown school after that and was a second-team All-Horizon League pick as a junior and a third-team honoree as a senior.

Lucas was a three-star recruit coming out of Washington Information Technology High. 247Sports.com rated him as the No. 138 player in the 2016 recruiting class. He also held offers from USC, Cleveland State, Old Dominion and Illinois-Chicago.

While not a stellar 3-point shooter (30.6 percent in his career), Lucas is a strong playmaker who has averaged 6.3 assists per 40 minutes of game action. He has a nearly two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio and is a 42 percent shooter for his career (47.1 percent from two-point range). He averaged 4.8 free throws per game at Milwaukee, making 76.5 percent of those attempts.

Nevada returns two All-Mountain West guards in Grant Sherfield and Desmond Cambridge Jr., but Lucas could find a role with the Wolf Pack as a scoring pop off the bench and a backup to Sherfield, who logged 34.7 minutes per game last season. Backup point guard was a position of weakness for Nevada, which also could start Lucas in a smallball lineup.

While graduate transfers such as Lucas have historically been immediately eligible at their new school, the new one-time transfer rule has made it more difficult for grad transfers joining a third Division I college to be immediately eligible at their next school. Lucas has one season of eligibility remaining.

The Wolf Pack had a scholarship free up Monday when Wichita State transfer Trey Wade de-committed to be closer to his home in Georgia, citing his grandfather's illness. Nevada has 12 of its 13 scholarship filled for the 2021-22 roster.
