TROY, NY – The series began with a benches clearing incident on Friday night that led to both managers getting ejected. It ended with the Valleycats sweeping the Sussex County Miners and extending their home winning streak to seven games.
“It’s obviously great to sweep someone, especially having a little beef with them, for whatever reasons,” said Tri-City first baseman, Brad Zunica. “That’s not what we’re focused on though, we’re focused on playing good ball everyday and trying to put the best product on the field that we can.”
The series finale favored the Valleycats 4-3 and was capped off by a clutch Zunica homer and a strong showing from the ‘Cats bullpen.
The Miners put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning, off Valleycats starter Parker Kelly. The ‘Cats answered back in the bottom half of another eventful first inning, scoring three to take the lead.
Chris Kwitzer doubled with one out and Willy Garcia walked, sending Zunica to the plate, who hit them both in with a two RBI double. Nelson Molina then hit Zunica in with a go-ahead, two-out single.
Jackie Urbaez tied things up for Sussex with a RBI double in the top of the fifth, a run charged to Kelly, who’d go 4.1 innings. Kelly would allow three runs, two earned and walk four. He didn’t factor into the decision.
Valleycats manager Pete Incaviglia revealed afterwards that Kelly had a blister re-open up, that he was trying to work through. Kelly threw just 70 pitches in his outing.
Daniel Kreuzer would get out of the fifth inning and go 1.1 innings, allowing three hits. Frankie Jimenez got the final out of the sixth, en-route to a 2.1 inning relief appearance and the win.
“Frankie’s been throwing the ball extremely well and has been a guy that we count on at the back end of the bullpen, him and Trey. They’ve done an absolutely fantastic job,” Incaviglia said.
In the bottom of the sixth, Zunica hit a two-out, go-ahead solo home run, giving Tri-City a 4-3 lead. Zunica was 2-for-3 with a double, homer and three RBIs. Zach Biermann also had a two-hit game for the ‘Cats.
Thomas Incaviglia, the acting manager, would hand the ball to Trey Cochran-Gill for the ninth inning, who’d convert his 17th save of the season.
Pete Incaviglia and Miners manager Bobby Jones were each suspended two games for their role in the benches clearing incident last Friday. The first game of that suspension was served on Sunday. The other game will be next Friday, when the two teams see each other again, at The Joe.
Tri-City is now 33-31 overall this season and the Miners are 37-27. The Valleycats hold a three game lead over Quebec and New York in the Atlantic Division. After an off day on Monday, the ‘Cats will play a four-game series at New Jersey, beginning with a double-header on Tuesday August 10.
