BIG RAPIDS - Brian Garlock came to Ferris State University on Saturday.
But without the Stanley Cup.
The Big Rapids native and current Tampa Bay Lightning video coordinator played in the annual Ferris State hockey golf outing at Katke Golf Course on Saturday. He was slated to bring the Stanley Cup to Big Rapids last month but had to cancel his plans because of COVID.
He brought his golf clubs to Big Rapids on Saturday.
"This is a circled event every year, that's for sure," Garlock said. "To be back and be a part of it, it's an awesome program. I've been around it my entire life. To come back, see all the guys and catch up with old friends, it's an amazing time for me in the offseason every year."
Garlock has been with a franchise, which has now won two back-to-back Stanley Cups.
"It's still a little surreal and takes a lot of soaking in," he said. "When it does, it's a testament to our guys. It's a long time coming. To get over the hump and have it happen twice is a lifetime achievement. It's something everybody is proud of. I'm really lucky to be a part of it."
Garlock was also with the Lightning during its 2020 Cup title run along with former Ferris assistant coach Derek Lalonde, who is still on staff.
Garlock came to Tampa Bay eight years ago after spending three years under head coach Jon Cooper at both the Syracuse Crunch and Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League, an affiliate of the Lightning. Norfolk later moved to Syracuse.
Garlock aids the staff in video scouting, game planning and preparation and is considered a member of the coaching staff.
Garlock previously worked with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL and the St. Louis Bandits of the NAHL as an assistant coach, in both places under Cooper.
"I've worked with Jon Cooper for a long time, almost 15 years now," Garlock said.
His parents Bruce and Janet Garlock still live in Big Rapids.
"It's crazy of the quality of people to come through the (Ferris) program," he said. "It's a testament to the program. Now they're all coaching and doing their own thing. For me, this is where it all started."
Garlock said his health is back to 100 percent.
"It was very disappointing not to bring the Cup back," he said. "I did find out (last week) that it is coming, it's just going to come next summer. We have another 12 months before the Cup comes to town. This is my hometown, this is where I grew up. This is where I spend my offseason. It's no different than any other summer except having a Stanley Cup ring. It's going to be cool when I can bring the Cup back and celebrate it with family and friends. I enjoy my time here and it's awesome to be back.
"Our guys played unbelievable and executed at level that's unreal."
Tampa is currently the home of the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Bucs, the two-time Stanley Cup champion Lightning and defending American League baseball champs Tampa Bay Rays.
"It really is a hockey town and the Bucs took it to another level when they won the Super Bowl," Garlock said. "The fans have adopted Champion Bay. It's a sports town. You can see the city gets behind all sports team. The Lightning have made it a community team and they've given the city a little identity. The support behind it is unbelievable."
