PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's water polo team opened the day with a dominate 15-4 win over St. Francis Brooklyn on the road in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania before heading back to its home pool in Philadelphia to take on #20 Princeton. The Explorers came up just short dropping the contest to the Tigers 10-8.La Salle ends the weekend with a 2-2 record having recorded margins of victories in the double digits against both Mercyhurst and St. Francis.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (ST. FRANCIS):
- La Salle earned its second consecutive double-digit scoring effort of the season with 15 goals in the game against St. Francis Brooklyn. The Explorers only gave up four goals to the Terriers in the game.
- Kalista Hyham paced the offensive effort for the Explorers with a season-high five goals in the contest. She shot 71.4% in the game missing just two of her seven shots.
- Francesca Co' added three goals on the morning and recorded a team-high three assists. The freshman shot 50.0% in the game.
- Sarah Defusco and Tatum Lomax recorded two goals apiece with Defusco shooting 66.7% in the game and Lomax shooting 50.0%.
- Sophia Appler, Madelyn Koerper and Casey Malone rounded out the offensive effort for La Salle with one goal each.
- Karle Linden led the steal effort with three steals in the game.
- Emma Gurasich made a total of 11 saves in the net and added two assists and one steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED (PRINCETON):
- The Tigers won the spring to gain possession to start the game. An exlusion on Martinez set up Princeton for a man-up goal to take the lead. The Tigers rattled off one more before Defusco found the back of the net with a powerplay goal to cut the deficit back to one at the end of the first period, 2-1.
- Princeton once again capitalized on the power play opportunity that was quickly answered by Hyham for the Explorers to maintain the one-point gap, 3-2. Martinez connected with Appler at the 4:06 mark in the second period to tie the game, 3-3. Princeton added one more before the end of the period to maintain its single-point advantage over La Salle, 4-3.
- Once again, the Tigers scored first to pull back ahead by two points. Linden was there to cut the lead down to one, 5-4, with the man-up advantage. Princeton found the back of the net two more times to pull ahead by three, 7-4. Appler connected with Hyahm with just 20 seconds left to go in the third period to bring La Salle back within two, 7-5.
- The Explorers had the first say in the fourth with a goal by Koerper just seconds into play to put La Salle back within one point of tying the score, 7-6. Princeton held the 3-2 advantage over the Explorers through the rest of play to walk away with the 10-8 victory.
- Hyham paced the Explorers with a team-high three goals followed by Defusco with two. Koerper, Appler and Linden added one goal each.
- Martinez was the key helping hand in the game with three assists.
- Gurasich spent all 32 minutes in the cage totaling nine saves on 29 shots faced for a save percentage of 47.4%
- Martinez led on defense with three steals.
- Princeton converted 10 of its 29 (.345) shots while La Salle converted 8 of its 30 (.267). The Explorers only converted on two of its nine power plays while the Tigers converted on three of eight.
- The Explorers head up north for a series of five games from Friday, Feb. 4 to Sunday, Feb. 6 against Cal Baptist, Marist, Brown, Pomona and Harvard.
