Michigan State football flipped Germie Bernard from Washington this past week and his commitment is a sign of things to come under Mel Tucker.
“We recruit every day.”
Those words from Mel Tucker have never seemed more true than during the 2022 recruiting cycle. Michigan State football was able to sign the No. 21 recruiting class in the country during the early period and it has since jumped to No. 17 before February’s signing day following a major commitment.
Four-star wide receiver Germie Bernard was a top Michigan State target before the early period, but he stuck with his Washington commitment and top target Armani Winfield went from Spartan lean to Baylor signee.
It looked like the Spartans were going to miss out on both top receiver targets outside of Antonio Gates Jr., but after he was released from his Washington NLI this week, Bernard was looking like a lock to join Michigan State’s 2022 class.
On Sunday, he did just that.
Bernard was a crown jewel in Washington’s class, but he decided that the uncertainty under the new coaching staff was too much to overcome and decided to join Tucker and Co.
The fact that Katin Houser and Bernard have a history together didn’t hurt, either.
Bernard is the No. 220 overall player and 33rd-best receiver in the class, per the composite.
A sign of things to come for Mel Tucker’s Michigan State football
Michigan State currently has the No. 17 recruiting class for 2022 as well as one of the top transfer classes in the country which means that they won’t have any issues replacing talent from an 11-2 squad.
Tucker has pieced together Michigan State’s best class since 2016 and most of the commitments came from before the season. Just imagine how elite his classes will be when he can sell the on-field results like his 11-2 Peach Bowl-winning season. His 2023 class should be even better.
What’s even more impressive is the fact that Bernard’s commitment and instant enrolling gives the Spartans six four-star signees in the 2022 class which is the same numbers as a handful of previous classes, according to The Athletic‘s Colton Pouncy.
As long as Tucker continues to win, he’s going to keep reeling in big fish and improving on those impressive recruiting numbers each cycle.
Bernard’s flip from Washington to MSU is a prime example of what we can expect.
