SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — While it’s almost always a treat to watch a live musical, seeing Come From Away on the Proctors stage is just the jolt of riveting entertainment we all may need to cap off this cold and boring pandemic January.
At a time when live performance is rather scarce, Come From Away visiting Schenectady is a major stroke of good luck for the Capital Region.
This highly regarded production tells the story of airline passengers stranded in a small town in Newfoundland, where they were housed and welcomed immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
It’s a remarkable story about humanity, and best of all – it’s true. As a journalist, I love a true story, and I think this one is told perfectly.
The Come From Away cast touring at Proctors this week are a hardworking bunch. Each of the 12 actors played multiple roles, showing their diverse skills while still keeping it easy for audience members to follow along with everyone’s storyline.
For the characters, throughout the nearly two-hour performance cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.
Sounds too good to be true? Well, it is true. From the love story between foreigners to the trailblazing female pilot to the rare Bonobo apes – all of the seemingly far-fetched details are in fact real-life anecdotes.
This play takes a look at the last time the world stopped – and how a group of people as diverse as possible found their way through what most would consider a terrible travel experience and managed to walk away better for it, and with an amazing story to tell.
Now that the world has stopped once again, this time due to COVID-19, I think it’s an opportune moment to look to the folks in this story for inspiration. Come From Away’s characters, and the people they’re based on, are marvelous examples of how to weather through hard times.
Come From Away will continue at Proctors through Sunday, Jan. 30. Proof of vaccination is required for entry and face masks must be worn in the theater.
Tickets and more information about Come From Away are available online at proctors.org.
For those who may not be able to attend, Come From Away can also be enjoyed from the comforts of home. A performance filmed live on stage at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City is available for streaming through Apple TV+.
