SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - There are over six pages worth of activities happening this weekend at the University of Okoboji Winter Games.
One of the big activities taking place in the Iowa Great Lakes is the kite festival.
For years, The University of Okoboji Winter Games kite festival has filled the January sky and brought in fliers from all over the globe. Some people came all the way from Germany, France and New Zealand to take part.
These fliers turned down the chance to fly in fairer weather to come fly over the weekend in the Iowa Great Lakes.
“It’s our kite-flying season in New Zealand at the moment, all of our summer festivals are on. But I swapped summer for winter and decided to come here instead,” said Craig Hansen, a kite flyer from New Zealand.
“On the same day, we received an invitation to fly in Qatar, 30 degrees Celsius, and one for Okoboji. And we said forget Qatar, we’re going to Okoboji because it’s just an amazing experience,” said Nicolas Grez, a kite flyer from France.
This weekend, people up in Okoboji can look to the sky to see a lot of sea creatures, and there’s a reason that so many of the kites are inspired by things underwater.
“Animals that live under the ocean also have to be aerodynamic, or hydrodynamic in their case. Which lends itself to being a kite,” said Hansen.
“With a little more wind we hope to show off everything over the weekend; we have dragons, seahorses, starfish. A lot of sea creature designs,” said Rolf Zimmerman, a kite flyer from Germany.
Unlike most events at the Winter Games, the kite shows aren’t a competition. And fliers can be seen helping each other to make the best experience they can.
“We are all on the same team, we have the same spirit of ‘fill up the sky,’” said Grez.
“The purpose, really, is to make memories for people. Families come along and see the kites, spend some time with their kids and never forget that day they went and saw the kites,” said Hansen.
