Bills gearing up for winter weather, physical football as Steelers come to town for playoff game | WHAM - 13WHAM-TV

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WHAM) — This past Sunday in Miami, it was perfect weather to play football: high 60s, calm as could be.

This Sunday in Orchard Park, it won't be — with heavy wind and temperatures in the 20s in the forecast.

When asked whether the weather is a mindset or requires preparation, Sean McDermott said it's "a little bit of both."

"We've been through a lot of games here where we've had to, no pun intended, weather the storm," McDermott said. "It affects a lot of things. It affects how you play the game, how you manage the game. When we have that here, it's an added dimension to our preparation."

The players have to be prepared to play in the bad weather, but they don't have to like it.

"(We're) better suited to play in it because we live in it and when you walk outside you're in it," Ed Oliver said. "Like? I don't about 'like,' but can (we) tolerate it better than the other team? Yeah."

What else is different this week is the type of team they're playing. Miami likes to play fast, while Pittsburgh is a physical team that loves to run the football.

Josh Allen said that's to be expected this time of year.

"That's playoff football," Allen said. "Especially in the Northeast. This is two teams that are used to this type of weather, and the game plans are going to be probably slightly different than what we're both used to. It's (going to come down to) whoever can come out on Sunday and execute the best."

Playoff football is physical, and McDermott calls the Steelers "very physical."

"Very, very physical," he said. "As physical as we've seen this season."

The Steelers run the football more than any team in the NFL. But Da'Quan Jones said the mindset doesn't change.

"For me, nothing really changes," he said. "At the same time, playing football, you take it up another notch and just continue to keep on whooping another man."

Does McDermott think his team is ready for a physical matchup?

"Very confident, yeah," he said. "But that's why we're going out to practice today as well, to continue to work on those key fundamentals that we're going to need to execute come Sunday."

The No. 2 seed Bills (11-6) will host the No. 7 seed Steelers (10-7) Sunday at 1 p.m. in an AFC wild-card playoff game. The 13WHAM sports team will have a special live edition of Buffalo Plus from Orchard Park coming up Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on Fox Rochester.
