NEW YORK — There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in New York City after results for several people have come back negative, health officials announced Wednesday.
“All negative for novel #coronavirus in NYC! @CDCgov has confirmed that the 7th person tested in the city has come back negative. We now have zero cases pending,” the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene tweeted.
As of Wednesday, six NYC residents who were under observation for possible coronavirus have tested negative for the disease. A seventh patient — who is not an NYC resident — also tested negative, the health department said.
There are currently no pending or possible cases.
Health officials continue to assure New Yorkers the risks of getting the sickness in the city is low.
More than 1,100 people have died from the virus, and about 45,000 people have been infected worldwide — with 520 confirmed cases outside of China.
There are currently 13 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States.
The World Health Organization officially named the new coronavirus Tuesday: COVID-19.
Heath officials said the first vaccine for COVID-19 could be ready in about 18 months, but there are steps taken each day to prevent the spread of the disease.
For those who feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, and traveled to Hubei province China—or been in contact with a confirmed case nCoV— within 14 days of symptom onset, CDC recommends:
- Seek medical care right away. Before going to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about recent travel and symptoms.
- Avoid contact with others.
- Do not travel while sick.
- Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not hands) when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
