Gulls come up on short end of overtime loss on road - The San Diego Union-Tribune

The San Diego Gulls got a point on Monday afternoon at the Stockton Arena, but they really wanted that second point.

The Gulls rallied from two goals down in the third period to force overtime before Ron Hamilton’s goal with just 44 seconds left in the extra period gave the Stockton Heat (28-13-3-3) a 3-2 victory. The Gulls fall to 23-17-5-2 but gain a point on fourth-place Ontario and are four points behind the Reign for the final Pacific Division playoff spot with three games in hand.

The Gulls and Stockton will meet again on Wednesday night at Pechanga Arena.

“That’s hockey,” said Gulls coach Kevin Dineen after the defeat. “You sit there and you need to manage it. We felt like in overtime, for the most part, right up to that shift, there was a couple of hiccups that ended up costing us the game. Those are the things that you don’t like as lessons at this time of the year. You like not to have that as part of your makeup.”

Stockton took a 1-0 lead at 16:50 of the first period on a short-handed goal, and it remained that way until the third period.

The Heat made it it 2-0 just 30 seconds into the final period before the Gulls offense got going.

Alex Broadhurst scored his seventh goal of the season at 6:34 on an assist from Maxime Comtois. A little less than six minutes later, Comtois scored an unassisted goal to tie the game.

In overtime, Stockton applied the pressure with four shots on goalie Anthony Stolarz (18-11-4) while the Gulls offense had just one shot on net.

The Gulls were 0 for 5 on the power play in the game.

“We loved our start and we loved our first period,” said Dineen. “It felt like we were dictating the pace.

“They had a good night in net and we weren’t disappointed with the way we played. Our penalty killing was good, but our power play needed to be much better to be a difference tonight.”
