Bats Come Alive in Panthers' 14-2 Win over Lock Haven - ohiodominicanpanthers.com

WILSON, N.C. – The Ohio Dominican baseball team tallied season high marks in hits and runs, spearheaded by a nine-run fourth inning, to earn a 14-2 victory over Lock Haven Saturday afternoon.

The neutral-site contest saw seven players for ODU record multiple hits, including the first six lineup spots, as the Panthers finished with 16 over six innings of plate appearances. Sophomore Manny Vorhees (Wapakoneta, Ohio) led the way with a 3-for-4 performance. Vorhees added two RBI and two runs scored as well. Graduate senior Cory Contini (Dover, Ohio) registered a team-best three runs to go along with a pair of triples and classmate Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Senior Clay Davies (Massillon, Ohio) tossed all seven innings on the mound, earning his first win and complete game as a Panther. Davies allowed six hits and one earned run, while striking out two batters. The senior retired the final five batters he faced.

The Panthers tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed Saturday. Four of the first five batters for ODU recorded a hit, which included three extra-base knocks. Contini led off with a triple. After an out, senior Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio), Vorhees and freshman Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) posted a single, double and triple respectively to give ODU the three-run advantage.

Leading 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth frame, the Black & Gold had 14 batters come to the plate, logging five hits to score nine runs. Vorhees opened the scoring with a sac fly. Freshmen Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) and Derek Kutrubs (Brunswick, Ohio) followed with back-to-back singles as three runners came across home plate. Also highlighting the inning was a two-out triple from Contini that scored two Panthers.

Lock Haven (4-6) logged its second run of the contest in the top of the fifth, but ODU added two more runs in the bottom half of the frame to make the score 14-2. Vorhees led off with a base hit and scored the next at-bat, a triple from Brill. The freshman later crossed home plate for what would be the final run of the contest.

Ohio Dominican will return to action Sunday, March 7, for its third consecutive day of action on the east coast. The Panthers and Cal (Pa.) are slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
