Booth Review: The Come-From-Behind Win - Duke University - GoDuke.com

Booth Review is a new series devoted to top moments from the eyes of radio play-by-play announcer David Shumate

Football

Duke football play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable football moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.

"After a rookie season that saw Daniel Jones rewrite the Duke freshman record books, the 2017 campaign looked promising for the Blue Devils to return to the postseason, continuing an unprecedent run of success under David Cutcliffe. Duke played in four consecutive bowl games from 2012 to 2015 and was eager to bounce back from a 2016 season that saw just four wins.

"After roaring out of the gates with four consecutive wins the Blue Devils dropped their next six, many in heartbreaking fashion as four of the losses came by seven points or less. Duke would snap that skid with a 43-20 thumping of Georgia Tech on senior night though to pull within one game of clinching a bowl spot.

"I remember I was on a red eye from Portland, due to my commitments with men's basketball, the night before our regular season finale that following weekend at Wake Forest. I was thinking to myself and wondering if the contest against the Yellow Jackets was a sign that this team had turned the corner. But even if they had, would it matter on the road against a Wake Forest team that already had seven wins, and was coming off an impressive home win over NC State.

"After Duke's first eight possessions featured an interception, six punts, and a field goal – the Blue Devils were down 17-3 and appeared to be in significant trouble. A late first half touchdown for Daniel Helm cut the deficit in half at intermission and I'll never forget how confidently Coach Cutcliffe proclaimed going into the locker room 'I can guarantee you we're going to be dancing at the end of this one.' Enough said. Duke went on to outscore Wake Forest 21-6 in the second half, converting three different times on fourth down. Jones gave the Blue Devils the lead for good early in the final quarter, and Mark Gilbert's second interception with 1:32 remaining clinched a return to the postseason.

"Jones would throw for 346 yards and rush for another 37, accounting for three total TDs as Duke won for the second time in as many weeks when trailing by double digits. A testament to a program and a coach whose foundations run much deeper than a play book."
