MILLBURN, NJ — Although it will be awhile before it can be put to use, a new baseball scoreboard recently was unveiled at the varsity baseball field at Millburn High School.
"The scoreboard was really part of Phase 2 of the whole renovation of our baseball complex," Millburn baseball coach Brian Chapman said.
The high school field underwent significant renovations prior to the 2018 baseball season, with new dugouts, a new backstop, a complete resodding of the field and new bleachers with much better sight lines for spectators. The Millburn Diamond Club had provided a gift of $353,200 to the Millburn Township School District to renovate the varsity baseball field.
"The new scoreboard is the latest upgrade to our Millburn facility," Chapman said. "Special thanks to Ted Bourke, the Millburn Diamond Club, and our supportive administration."
Chapman said that Bourke, a former mayor of Millburn, was instrumental in the acquisition of the new scoreboard, which is not complete. Eventually, there will be two more pieces added to the existing new scoreboard.
There was no spring baseball season at Millburn High School in 2020 because of the pandemic, and the team's summer games in the Last Dance Tournament all were contested at other fields outside of the township. Everything should be in place for the projected start of the 2021 baseball season next April or May.
Chapman called himself "humbled and blessed to work in such an amazing community."
