Rob Gronkowski wants to come back and win more with Tampa Bay - Boston Herald

He retired as a Super Bowl champion. Then he unretired, and stands atop the NFL once again with another Lombardi Trophy added to the collection.

It’s good to be Rob Gronkowski.

The tight end used his leverage on a Patriots team that had no cap space to put him back on the roster, and pretty much had to send him to Tampa where he was happy to rejoin Tom Brady.

It couldn’t have worked out any better for the duo.

Not only did Brady and Gronk add another ring, they also showcased their playoff magic.

In the Buccaneers 31-9 win over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV Sunday night, Gronkowski caught six passes for 67 yards, with two touchdowns.

The two scores, which came in the first half, vaulted Brady and Gronk over Joe Montana and Jerry Rice in the history books for the most prolific touchdown duo in the postseason.

While Gronk had primarily been used as a blocker in the three previous postseason games, he was Brady’s go-to-guy in the Super Bowl. Given their history, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

“You never know with this offense who’s going to get the ball, who’s going to make the plays, because we have so much talent on our team, too. That’s what made this team so special,” Gronkowski said. “We have so many superstars on the team, but no one’s head was too big during this year … whoever got the ball, got the ball. We were all happy for each other. We knew that we were all going to have to play together, and work together to win the game. And that’s what we did. That’s what we did all year long, and that’s what was so great about being with this team.

“There was no one that was selfish on this team … and it just happened to be me this time, me making the plays, and having the touchdown passes thrown to me.”

Gronkowski said in his last Super Bowl game with the Patriots, where he made a big play to help beat the Rams, 13-3, he was in a lot of pain from prior injuries, as well as a thigh injury he suffered in the game.

“I remember after that win, I was so done,” he said. “Coming off the field, I was like, ‘I’m just glad it’s over.’ The pain I was in, it was great to be champ, but it just felt great to be done.”

Gronkowski said it was important for him to heal up, and get his mind right during the year off. So he considered his options. Tampa was where he wanted to be, and the Patriots made it happen, shipping him to the Bucs for a fourth-round draft choice.

“I retired from being retired,” said Gronk. “What a journey it’s been, what a story it’s been. And what a start to the journey, and what a finish to the journey.”

Gronkowski’s first touchdown came on a tight end screen, as he took a Brady pass and rumbled into the end zone in the first quarter to give the Bucs a 7-3 lead. Brady also hit him with a 17-yard strike in the end zone to give the Bucs a little more cushion at 14-3 midway through the second quarter.

Gronk was especially pleased by how everyone worked together to get the Bucs off the mat, and owning a championship.

“From the defensive side, to the offensive side of the ball, everyone contributed. Everyone played their role,” said Gronkowski. “It was just amazing. What a year it was playing with these guys … I just can’t say that enough.

“The story is just unbelievable. It definitely rates as one of my biggest accomplishments.”

Gronkowski has indicated he wants to come back and play next season. His contract is up, but he’s hoping to remain with Brady in Tampa.

“I’m a free agent. It’s the first time in my career that I’m a free agent,” said Gronkowski. “But I definitely see myself coming back (to Tampa). The guys around here, the players around here, the coaches, the people in the front office, they’re all just great people. I’ve loved working with them, so I’m obviously going to soak this in and see where I’m at in a couple of weeks, but I don’t see why not, I don’t see why I won’t be back.”
