Siena women's basketball has 'come too far' to cancel rest of season - Times Union

The Siena women’s basketball team has played only five times this season because of COVID-19 and is idle this weekend because of a lack of numbers.

That doesn’t mean the Saints plan on canceling the remainder of their season, as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Canisius decided on Thursday.

“No, there’s no thought about us not playing,” Saints head coach Ali Jaques said Friday. “Our kids have come way too far. They just want to get on the court and play.”

The Saints (2-3 overall, 2-3 MAAC) competed with only six available players in a 61-60 loss at Monmouth on Wednesday. With half the team still in quarantine, Siena decided against playing back-to-back games at Manhattan on Saturday and Sunday.

Jaques said she thinks her players would have been willing to do it but “cooler heads prevailed.”

“Playing back-to-back with six is just too much for us right now and it’s more a health and safety issue from that standpoint,” she said. “And then coming off the game against Monmouth, we were probably asking people to play more minutes than they’re capable of and just with some of the nagging things it just made more sense (not to play).”

Cansius, which hadn’t played since Dec. 20, said it didn’t have enough players to safely practice and compete, between COVID-19 and non-virus-related injuries.

On the other hand, Jaques said Siena is getting players out of quarantine on Friday night at midnight and Saturday.

“So we’re going to get back on the court on Monday,” she said. “Oh my God, I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself (with more players).”

The Saints are scheduled to host Marist next Friday and Saturday.

Jaques said she only had four players practice on Friday. She gave senior guard Rayshel Brown the day off. Brown appeared to be having foot or ankle issues during Wednesday’s game.

“I’ll probably give her (Saturday) off, too, but she’s fine,” Jaques said. “I don’t want to say she’s injured. She’s not. It’s more precautionary than anything else with her.”

Jaques said the players, particularly captains Isis Young and Marilena Gerostergiou, have given no indication they want to call off the rest of the season.

“I think I talk more with players on an individual basis to see where they’re feeling,” Jaques said. “I’ve got great captains and Ice (Young) and I talk every day. I think that if there was that kind of feeling going on, I’m pretty sure my captains would relay that to me. That’s never been something that we’ve thought about.”
