The Crescent City has produced a mega number of NFL players, but only 32 who called metro New Orleans home had the opportunity to don the Black ‘n Gold of the Saints.

Every youngster dreams of playing at the highest level of sports for the home team, in front of family, friends and adoring fans. Those individuals who prepped in the Big Easy and surrounding area are no different. The Saints boast quite a few alums who sharpened their formative years on the playgrounds and high school fields in the Greater New Orleans area. A few completed their prep careers prior to the Saints landing in the Crescent City in 1967.

Here are some quickie notes on that select group:

-DB D’Artagnan “Dee” Martin (Carver) 4th round pick in 1971 (only season with team) made 3 interceptions as a rookie. Is in Kentucky State Hall of Fame after outstanding college career with 22 interceptions.

-OLB Kenny Bordelon (Brother Martin) Saints 1976-’82. 82 contests with 31 starts. Selected 5th round by Rams in ’76 draft, traded to Saints. All SEC DE at LSU 1974 and ’75. State championship at Brother Martin 1971.

-WR Al Dodd (West Jefferson)  1969-’71. 34 games, 80 catches, 1,382 yards 2 touchdowns. 4th round pick of Bears in ’67. 1965-’66 two time All American safety at Northwestern State. NAIA record 31 interceptions for Demons. NW State Hall of Fame. Converted to WR in NFL. Tragically killed in auto accident age 41, April 9, 1987.

-CB Arthur Maulet (Bonnabel)  undrafted with Saints 2017-’18. 7 game appearances. Currently with NY Jets. 11 starts in Big Apple, with 2 interceptions. All Metro 2010 and ’11 with Bruins, All-State at Bonnabel.

-WR Louis Lipps (East St. John)  1992 , 2 game appearances. While at Southern Miss had 91 grabs for 1,477 yards and 8 touchdowns (1989-’83). 1984 NFL Rookie of the Year, NFL career 359 catches, 6,019 yards , 39 touchdowns.

-OG Louis Oubre (St. Augustine) member of 1978 Class 4A state champion Purple Knights. All-State at St. Aug. All American at Oklahoma under head coach Barry Switzer. 5th round pick of Saints 1980, 30 starts at OG.

-CB Ashley Ambrose (Fortier) 1999 with Saints. 13 seasons in NFL , 42 career interceptions. Had 3 picks while with Saints along with 48 tackles in ’99. Was intern coach with Saints in 2013.

-LB Rusty Chambers (Loranger) 1975-’76 with Saints after arriving undrafted. Special teams dynamo. In 1973 led Tulane with 153 tackles. 45 career starts with Miami Dolphins. Died tragically in auto accident age 27 years, July 1, 1981.

-RB Gill Fenerty (Jesuit) 7th round pick of Saints 1986. 1990-’93 with Saints after stint in CFL. Totaled 832 yards  with 5 touchdowns, adding 41 catches for another 444 yards and 2 scores. Signed with LSU , transferred to Holy Cross University. Leading all-time rusher for Crusaders with 3,680 yards. In single game against Columbia, he rushed for 337 yards and 6 touchdowns on 18 carries.

-OT Sam Holden (St. Augustine) 1971 2nd round pick of Saints. 9 games at OT with Saints. Later played in WFL with Shreveport Steamer.

-WR Skyler Green (Higgins) 2008 with Saints and three seasons in NFL plus 3 more with Arena League’s New Orleans VooDoo and two more with CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos . Left LSU as #1 school history for punt returns (4 touchdowns) and #2 in punt return yards (1,064 yards). Spent time with Saints in 2003 and ’05. 1st Team All American with Tigers.

-OG Will Clapp (Brother Martin) 7th round pick 2018. All-State for Crusaders (2012, ’13) Twice All SEC at LSU (2016,’-17).  Freshman All American 2015. 36 starts in 3 years at LSU, 2,279 snaps, 218 knockdowns. Opted out senior campaign.

-WR Michael Haynes (Clark) 1994-’96, totaling 162 catches for 2,368 yards and 13 touchdowns.  Career in NFL, 428 catches, 6,588 yards, 47 touchdowns.

-CB Keenan Lewis (O.P. Walker)  Saints 2013-’18. 32 starts in Black n’ Gold producing 93 stops, 6 interceptions.

-WR Dwight Walker (East Jefferson) 1987 with Saints.  2 catches, 15 yards during strike season. While at Nicholls State paced Colonels 3 seasons in KR and once in PR..in 1978 had 2 punt returns for scores at Nicholls. In ’81 led Colonels with 50 grabs, 963 yards and 8 touchdowns.

-LB Michael Stonebreaker (John Curtis) 1994 in 2 games with Saints. Spent 1991 with Bears. Two time All-American (1988, 89) at Notre Dame. All-State at Curtis.

-OT Cornelius Lucas (Edna Karr) 6’8-328 only 6 days in Saints’ colors in 2018.  Entering 8th season (2021) in NFL.

-WR Derrick Lewis(Clark)  Saints 2002-’03. Only one catch for 7 yards. While at San Diego State Totaled 84 catches for 1,178 yards and 7 TD’s.

-RB Vincent Alexander (Covington) 1987 with Saints during strike season. While at Southern Miss (1983-’86) had 2,648 rushing yards and 10 TD’s.  Against Alabama (1983) returned opening kickoff 96 yards for touchdown.

-LB Ray Hester (Holy Cross) 6’2-215, undrafted with Saints in 1971. ’71-’73 with Black n’ Gold, 27 game appearances.. Led Tulane in tackles (1970) 152 stops.  32 consecutive starts for Green Wave. Ranks 7th all time at Tulane with 369 career stops .Twice All District at Holy Cross. Died Leukemia 28 years old, May 17,1977.

– OT Errol Linden (De La Salle) played in 134 NFL games. 1969-’70 with Saints starting 28 games.

-KR/PR/ WR Tyrone Hughes (St. Augustine) member of Saints Hall of Fame. While with Purple Knights, Louisiana Offensive Player of Year. Oct. 23, 1994 against Rams set NFL record with most KR yards (304 yards) and most combined KR/PR yards (347 yards) including two touchdowns on the day. In ’96 set NFL record with 1,791 KR yards. Paced League in kick return yards in 1994, ’95 and ’96. All Time Saints KR record with 5,717 yards, 1,060 PR yards and 5 total touchdowns.

-WR Brett Bech (Slidell) undrafted with Saints 1996-’99, 21 catches, 379 yards, 4 touchdowns. While at LSU (1991-’94), he had 89 grabs for 1,438 yards and 9 scores. Led Tigers in receiving 1993 and ’94. Currently a strength coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

-TE Malcolm Scott (St. Aug.) 1987 with Saints, 3 games, 6 catches, 35 yards. While at LSU (1979-’82), he snared 79 footballs for 877 yards, 5 TD’s.

-LB Michael Mauti (Mandeville)  Saints 2015-’17, 4 starts producing 57 tackles, 3 TFL. Vikings 7th round pick 2013. Played at Penn State. On Oct. 15, 2015 on Thursday Night football against Atlanta Falcons, blocked punt and recvered the ball for a touchdown en route to 31-21 Saints victory in Superdome.

-LB Rusty Rebowe (Destrehan) 1973 3A State defensive MVP for state title winners. 1978 Saints special teamer. Played with Hamilton Tigercats (1979)  All time Nicholls State leading tackler, 655 stops. 1977 All American for Colonels with 239 tackles.

-QB John Fourcade (Shaw) 4 year starter at Shaw for head coach Joe Zimmerman. Played with Saints 1987-’90, 2,312 yards and 14 touchdowns in 24 games. Ran for another 302 yards and 2 TD’s. Also 4 year starter for Steve Sloan at Ole Miss where he threw for 5,412 yards and 25 touchdowns.  He also ran for 1,301 yards and 22 TD’s for Rebels.

-LB Keith Fourcade (Shaw)  All-State for Eagles. Played with Saints 1987. 3 year starter at Ole Miss.

-RB Virgil Robinson (Landry) 1971-’72, 34 yards rushing, 1 touchdown. 12 grabs 53 yards, 1 score. In Grambling Hall of Fame.

-CB Delvin Breaux (McDonogh 35)  2015-’17. tallying 66 tackles, 3 interceptions and 20 passes defended.. Also played with Louisiana Bayou Viper and N.O. VooDoo.

-KR/ WR Michael Lewis (Grace King / Bonnabel) 2001-’06, 43 contests, 28 catches 553 yards 1 TD. Set NFL record in 2002 with 2,432 return yards, KR/ PR combined.  The ” Beer man” is Saints all time leader in punt returns (142) and punt return yardage (1,482 yards). Also holds record for Saints all time combined yards 7,087 yards. Played with Eagles (2000) and 49ers (2007).

-WR Talman Gardner (McDonogh 35) sprinter had 47 grabs for 944 yards (20.1 average) with 13 touchdowns as senior with Roneagles. He was #3 prospect in Louisiana in 1998 recruiting class. Blessed with blazing speed (4.29 forty, 10.5 hundred meters) he chose Florida State over offers from LSU, Tulane, Georgia and Florida. 90 career catches with Seminoles for 1,595 yards and 19 touchdowns.   Had 11 touchdown grabs in 2001 for ‘Noles. Was 7th round selection of hometown Saints in 2003. Had 4 catches for 52 yards with Black and Gold. Played in CFL (2006-’07).
