Lions Come Up Short in High-Scoring Affair - Southeastern Lions Athletics

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana came up short against Abilene Christian, 13-9, Friday in Southland Conference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Despite the series-opening loss to ACU (17-11, 9-8 Southland), the Lions (18-11, 11-6 Southland) remain in first place in the conference standings with a narrow, half-game lead over second-place New Orleans (16-14, 11-7 Southland).

Mitchell Dickson led off the game with a solo home run to left field and the Wildcats added a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly.

Southeastern cut the deficit in half in the fourth. Christian Garcia ripped a two-out double into the left-center field gap and came around to score on Champ Artigues' RBI single up the middle.

ACU extended its lead back to two runs in its next at-bat on a solo home run by third baseman Alexei Cazarin.

The Lions came right back, taking the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Evan Keller and Tyler Finke were aboard with two outs when Preston Faulkner lined his fourth home run of the season inside the left-field foul pole. Nick Ray followed with a walk, stealing second base before scoring on Garcia's second double in as many innings.

The lead was short-lived as the Wildcats responded with a five-run sixth. Southeastern pulled back within a run in the bottom of the inning, scoring a pair of Finke's two-out double to left.

ACU pushed its lead back to three, picking up a pair of runs on Colton Eager's eighth homer of the season. Once again, the Lions pulled back within a run, scoring two more in the seventh on a two-out triple inside the first-base bag off the bat of Eli Johnson.

Three more runs in the eighth by the Wildcats closed out the scoring.

Reliever Connor Carlton (1-1) earned the win, allowing two runs in one inning of work, and Tanner Riley closed out the game with 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season. Kyle Flettrich (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in 0.1 innings pitched.
