Racers Come Up Empty in Doubleheader against Belmont - MSU GoRacers

The Murray State Racers baseball team (16-16, 7-7 OVC) visited Belmont (16-16, 9-8 OVC) at E.S. Rose Park and came up empty in the pair of contests on Saturday, falling 8-2 and 8-5.

The Bruins held the Racers explosive offense in check behind two strong pitching performances from Joshua South and Andy Bean and used a pair of three-run innings take the series opening win and a three-run and a five-run inning in game two to take the series victory.

Bryson Bloomer extended his hitting streak to ten games, the longest of the season for the Racers with a 3-for-7 performance with two RBIs on the day.

Game One – Belmont 8, Murray State 2
After jumping out to an early one-run lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single from Bryson Bloomer, the Racers surrendered three runs in the bottom half of the inning and saw the Bruins tack on another in the second to lead 4-1.

Trey Woosley pulled Murray State one run closer with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right in the fourth inning.

Belmont posted another three-run inning in the bottom half of the fourth and added a single tally in the eighth to take game one, 8-2.

Jacob Pennington made his third start of the season, in place of the Racers usual game one starter, Shane Burns. He went 3.1 innings, taking the loss to fall to a 3-2 record on the season.

Malik Pogue came in for two-thirds of an inning and Quinton Kujawa threw one complete to give way to Carter Poiry. Poiry threw a career-long 3.0 innings and struck out a career-high four batters.

Game Two – Belmont 8, Murray State 5
Usually a power hitting team, the league leader in home runs played small ball in game two.

In the third inning, the Racers got on the board as Jake Slunder laid down a bunt for a single and Jordan Cozart walked to put two runners on. Brock Anderson hit a RBI double to drive in Slunder and Cozart came home on a sac fly from Bryson Bloomer.

Murray State extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Slunder showed off his speed again, legging out a triple down the left field line. Cozart collected his team-leading 34th RBI of the season, driving in Slunder from third.

Belmont's John Behrends tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run on a 3-0 pitch, Wenninger's only mistake of the game.

In the next inning, the Bruins used three hits, a hit batter and a pair of walks to post a five-run inning and take an 8-3 lead.

The Racers came up with two runs in the top of the eighth inning to draw within three of the Bruins.

Jack Wenninger was strong through 4.2 innings, striking out five.

Alec Whaley (2-2) took the loss for Racers. Jake Jones, Jordyn Naranjo and Cade Vernon came on in relief to pitch the final two scoreless innings.

Murray State faces off against Belmont tomorrow looking to avoid the sweep at 1 p.m. at E.S Rose Park.

The Racers remain on the road for a midweek game against Bellarmine in Louisville, Kentucky. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
