The Rockets rebuild just got a boost.
Fresh off a horrific season that saw them finish with a league-worst 17-55 record, the Rockets finally caught a break. They didn't get the No. 1 overall pick, but they will pick second in a top-heavy draft where the first four players could be franchise-changers.
The Detroit Pistons, who had the second-worst record in the league, will pick first.
That result avoided the disastrous scenario that actually had a 47.9 percent chance of happening – the Rockets dropping all the way to the No. 5 pick, which would have meant they had to send that pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder as a result of the 2019 Chris Paul-Russell Westbrook trade.
The top pick in the draft is expected to be Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham. The 6-foot-8 point guard was the Big 12 player of the year after averaging 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
Most people have USC big man Evan Mobley as the second-best player in the draft. The 20-year-old, 7-footer averaged 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. If the Rockets think his skill-set is too close to that of Christian Wood, they could opt for one of the next two players - Gonzaga point guard Jalen Suggs and the G League Ignite’s Jalen Green.
The 6-foot-4 Suggs, who banked in a 30-footer at the buzzer to beat UCLA in the Final Four, averaged 14.4 points and 4.5 assists per game.
The 6-foot-6 Green is a bit more of an unknown, since he opted to join the G League instead of attend college. Many scouts think the ultra-athletic Green is an even better offensive player than Cunningham.
