Woman injured in Ludwig Road hit and run wants driver to come forward - Fort Wayne's NBC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- The victim of a hit and run on the city's north side last week is left with a broken wrist and damaged bicycle.

Now she and her mom are asking for that driver to come forward.

"They clearly need to take care of this down here, there are no sidewalks, no lights, it is pitch dark at nighttime. You can't see nothing," Nicole Landis said.

Those factors may have contributed to last week's crash on Ludwig Road west of Lima Road that badly injured 20-year-old Bethany Velarde.

Bethany was riding her bike home from Meijer, groceries in her backpack, when a car hit her and kept on going.

"I looked down and my right wrist was, it was bad," she said.

Her crash is one of nearly two dozen that have happened on Ludwig west of Lima since the first of the year, some on the same day within hours of each other.

And there have been even more crashes on Ludwig at other intersections west of Lima.

Bethany and her mother say police told them security video of the area captured her crash, and that officers may have an idea who the driver was.

"Please call the police department and turn yourself in," Nicole said.

"I think you have to learn because I don't want you to do that to anyone else. That sucked. And this is going to suck for a moment," Bethany added.

They say people living in the area walk or bicycle along Ludwig Road all hours of the day and night, and they're pleading with the public to keep that in mind.

"Man, I know people like to ride their bike up and down that road, too, and I've heard other people got clipped on there, too, because it's so dark at night. You can't see anything," Bethany said.

"I say slow down. Please slow down because you don't know who is walking along there. A lot of people use that route to go to the store, to go to work. Just please slow down," her mother said.

They both hope upgrades and improvements will be made along Ludwig Road eventually to help reduce the chance that anyone else will have to endure what Bethany is going through right now.
