ANAHEIM — The Angels were on the verge of celebrating a dramatic victory, one in which they’d pushed Shohei Ohtani to a new level and dealt with the perfect storm of events that led to them having two pitchers in their batting order.

And it was suddenly gone with a voice into an umpire’s headset.

The apparent winning run in the 12th inning was overturned and the Angels ended up losing, 9-3, to the San Francisco Giants when Alex Claudio and Junior Guerra spoiled an otherwise good bullpen day in the 13th on Wednesday afternoon.

“Could you say we had that game won and it was taken away from us?” Manager Joe Maddon asked. “I don’t know what, video-wise, people saw, but I give our guys a lot of credit for fighting over some difficult circumstances.”

The Angels had the potential winning run in scoring position with no outs in the ninth, 10th and 11th – the latter two placed there automatically – and they couldn’t get him home. They were 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

The game had reached that point because of six strong innings from Ohtani – on 105 pitches, his most in three years – and then nearly spotless relief from Mike Mayers, Raisel Iglesias and Steve Cishek.

Cishek finally gave up a run in the top of the 12th, but the Angels still got that one back and thought they had one more, despite an awkward scenario the resulted from Maddon getting burned on his lineup gamble.

The Angels started the game with Ohtani hitting for himself, even though Justin Upton was out with a sore back so they had only two healthy players on the bench. It was the first game in major league history in which an American League team started with its pitcher hitting while the National League team had a DH.

In the top of the 12th, just before the Giants scored, catcher Kurt Suzuki took a foul ball off the mask and had to come out of the game. Taylor Ward had to come in from left field to catch and pitcher Griffin Canning had to play left field.

Even down by a run and with Canning leading off the bottom of the 12th, the Angels thought they had the game won.

Canning dropped down a perfect bunt and then Juan Lagares tied the score with an infield hit. Lagares aggressively went from first to third on David Fletcher’s infield hit.

Luis Rengifo then hit a grounder to first, and Darin Ruf fired the ball home as Lagares slid into the plate. He was called safe, but it was close enough that no one in the Angels’ dugout could fully celebrate. Umpires headed immediately for their headsets behind the plate, and the call was overturned.

“What I saw is a safe call, and when I saw the replay I didn’t see anything conclusive to overturn it,” Maddon said. “It’s simple. I thought it would stand. That’s why the call on the field was so important. I don’t know who or why they chose to overturn it. I’m certain if I started complaining it wouldn’t matter. … I just would like to see the exact evidence indicating the call should have been overturned. That’s all.”

By the time the Angels got to hit again in the 13th, the game was suddenly a blowout. Claudio walked two hitters – and put another on intentionally – and then Guerra threw a run-scoring wild pitch, gave up a two-run single and then a three-run homer.

It ruined an afternoon in which Ohtani threw the most pitches he’d thrown since before he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018.

Maddon surprisingly sent him back to the mound in the sixth, even though he’d made the final out in the bottom of the fifth and escaped a high-pressure situation with his 94th pitch in the top of the fifth.

He struck out Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford, hitting 99 mph, to strand two runners in a game the Angels trailed, 1-0.

“He poured it out at the end,” Maddon said. “He got even better. He was throwing harder. He really wanted to do it. When you get stretched that like that mentally, you can do it again. Everything was in order to do it and he responded extremely well. He likes the moment. He likes the challenge and he responded extremely well.”

Ohtani made Maddon’s decision look good when he needed just 11 pitches to get through the sixth.

“Another outstanding performance,” Maddon said. “At the beginning, he was a little bit off and he got into his rhythm. He gave us a wonderful chance to win. Their pitcher (Kevin Gausman) pitched well too. It’s one of those games you can win so many ways, and you don’t. That’s what’s frustrating.”
