Camping with the Jaguars: Lawrence feels he has “come a long way” - jaguars.com

JACKSONVILLE – We don't yet know if Trevor Lawrence will start Saturday.

Here's what we do know:

The Jaguars' rookie quarterback is improving daily. Head Coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell each said it in recent days, and the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft said Thursday he is seeing the same thing as 2021 Training Camp continues.

"I feel good," Lawrence said Thursday, two days before the Jaguars will play host to the Cleveland Browns in the 2021 preseason opener at TIAA Bank Field Saturday at 7 p.m. "I feel like I've come a long way, especially in camp, of just owning (the offense), knowing where my answers are and being able to make adjustments.

"I think that's the biggest thing, transitioning from college to the NFL. You're going to see a bunch of different looks. It's really about how you respond and adjust to different situations. That's something I've just had to learn, and I've gotten a lot better at it the past few weeks.

"I feel good about where the offense is. There's still a long way to go. But we're making progress."

Meyer on Thursday opted against naming a starting quarterback for Saturday, telling media before Thursday's practice that both Lawrence and veteran Gardner Minshew II will play. Meyer said a starter and likely repetitions will be decided Thursday night.

"I know I'm going to play," Lawrence said. "If I know I'm going to play, I'm going to be prepared. That's how I'm looking at it. How much? I don't really know for sure. I'm sure a fair amount. I'm just going to be ready."

Lawrence was asked if he would be comfortable lobbying for increased repetitions.

"I'd be comfortable, but I don't think that will really help," Lawrence said, laughing. "I don't think it will really matter. We're all like that. When you get in a game, get rolling and get in a rhythm, you want to keep playing. But you also have to understand it's a long season.

"I understand that. I just really trust the coaches and their plan."

Lawrence said his improvement in recent weeks in large part has come from increased trust between he and his new teammates.

"I'm not having to really think," he said. "I know what I'm doing. They know what they're doing. I know the spot they're going to be in. We're getting more and more comfortable and for me it's just keeping it simple, finding the open guy, not trying to do too much. We have great players. I don't have to run around and do too much. We have guys who can make plays. It's just trusting them.

"As time goes on, you keep learning. When you make a mistake it's like, 'Well, I'm not going to do that again.' I've had a few dumb mistakes over the past few weeks. That's just part of the learning curve, the learning process.

"The good thing is when you make a mistake, you're probably not going to do the same thing again. That's the way I've been looking at it."

Lawrence on a specific area he has improved since camp began: "I think just playing faster – out of the huddle, seeing it, making my adjustments, making my calls and getting the ball snapped. At first, I was letting the play clock get down and I was waiting. Now, I feel like we're in a good rhythm and routine and we're calling things a lot faster."

Meyer before practice also addressed cornerback CJ Henderson, who has practiced the last three days after missing nine of the first 10 '21 camp practices – the first eight on the COVID-19 list and a ninth for personal reasons. "He's been fighting," Meyer said. "His father's been great, his mom's been great, good people. … I see a guy that's fighting through stuff right now and the stuff is a lot. He had to get ready for training camp, [then] boom, …COVID. Last year, obviously [his] rookie year started off strong and then fought with injuries, so there's a lot to this."

Meyer said Thursday that offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell will work games from the press box this season, with passing-game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Joe Cullen working from the sidelines.
