Heinz Brinkmann’s idiosyncratic documentary gives us a guided tour of a Baltic island with a fractured history.
Accompanied by a jolly brass band and snoozy narration, the documentary “Usedom: A Clear View of the Sea” lingers on the titular forested island, a popular vacation spot on the Baltic Sea.
Shaping personal and geographical history into sun-drenched dollops, the director Heinz Brinkmann fashions a charmingly quirky guide to his island home. The east side might belong to Poland and the west to Germany, but the devoted residents have replaced a difficult past with an atmosphere of unity and tolerance. And while more than one person laments the razing of historic seaside architecture after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a gigantic Radisson rearing toward completion offers a powerful economic rebuttal.
Swarming seafronts and a booming spa culture back it up, as do many of the interviewees, an eclectic and mostly entertaining bunch. A satisfied nudist (“This is paradise”) bakes on the beach, his knee politely cocked; the well-traveled owner of a snazzy hotel enthuses over the pleasures of luxury accommodations and high tea, now and then flashing a vulpine smile; an organic farmer strides cheerily toward the camera, his herd of golden cows galloping behind.
A sequel of sorts to Brinkmann’s similarly named 1992 film, “Usedom” dips back into the earlier work to compare notes. Yet when winter arrives and the nudists are gone, the place that one local calls “an island of displaced persons” and others have named, less poetically, “Berlin’s bathtub” still resists easy assessment.
Not to one enthusiastic real estate developer. “Usedom is sexy,” he insists. “Usedom is cool.” I wouldn’t dream of disagreeing.
