"I think we saw some really good moments of soccer tonight from our team," head coach Erin Chastain said. "I didn't think we defended our box as well as we have. Wisconsin really had two chances tonight, and they capitalized on them. In other moments we made it really difficult on them to have any clean looks but I thought we were undisciplined on those plays. We can be better than that. Loved how we were assertive we were on the goal we scored and we talked about scoring a goal like that. I'm proud of the group for coming out and setting the tone. This is good learning, it is early in Big Ten play and certainly we are disappointed in the loss and we will learn from it and be a better team because of it come Thursday [against Ohio State].
It was another quick goal for the Gophers when Brown scored her third goal of the season in the 11th minute. Brown charged forward on the left side of the box before she sent a ball toward the net that eventually trickled into the goal. The first-half goal for the Maroon and Gold is the eighth of the season out of the nine goals the team has scored.
Wisconsin's first goal came in the 15th minute from the foot of Emma Jaskaniec who fired home a left-footed ball that beat Minnesota goalkeeper Megan Plaschko. The goal conceded was the first of the season for the Minnesota defense. The Gophers were the last team to concede a goal in all of Division I NCAA soccer with both Tennessee and Wake Forest giving up goals in their matches on Thursday and Friday.
Saturday's game-winning goal came from Wisconsin's Jenna Kiraly in the 82nd minute. Kiraly, who was set to be substituted by a teammate, found herself in the middle of the box after a misplay by the Gopher defense and capitalized on the chance on the left side of the goal.
Overall the Badgers held a slight advantage in shots with nine to the Gophers seven with the Maroon and Gold holding a shot advantage of 6-5 in the second half. Plaschko made a match-high five saves in the loss while Wisconsin's Jordyn Bloomer was forced to make three saves for Wisconsin.
Minnesota continues its Big Ten schedule with a pair of road matches with the first coming against Ohio State (5-3-0, 0-0-0 B1G) on Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. The Gophers will pair that match with a road test against Michigan State (5-0-2, 0-0-0 B1G) on Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. Both matches will be streamed on BTN+.
