The rookies strike again!
Who would have thought back in April that heading into the playoffs, players named Meyers, McCormick, Siri or Solomon would be the key players in heroic Astros comeback victories?
After another flameout by Zack Greinke, Peter Solomon saved the day by pitching four innings of one-run ball, keeping the Astros close. In the eighth inning, Jose Siri and Chas McCormick’s back-to-back homers gave the Astros the win. And although Jake Meyers didn’t have a heroic homer in this game, his defense in center field helped keep the game close.
The Astros struck first on a three-run home run by Carlos Correa against D-Back starter Zac Gallen. But Gallen allowed only one more run through his six innings on a double by Kyle Tucker in the fourth scoring Carlos Correa.
The rally in the fourth was cut short when Tucker, for the second game in a row, got thrown out in a rundown between third and home. This time he started home on a grounder when the D-Back third baseman, Josh VanMeter, threw to second to begin a double play. But second baseman Ketel Marte, instead of completing the double play by throwing to first, noticed Tucker heading home, and easily completed the 5-4-2 double play getting Tucker at home.
Zack Greinke was woefully ineffective for his third straight start, allowing five runs in four innings pitched. Including today, in his last three games, Greinke has thrown 13 innings, allowing 18 runs, a 12.46 ERA.
Arizona began coming back from its early deficit with a run in the third on a home run by Pavin Smith. The D-Backs got four more in the fourth on four singles and a walk.
Greinke didn’t get past the fourth, and his replacement, recent call-up Peter Solomon, allowed a run in the fifth after walking the first batter, Josh Rojas, allowing a single to Ketel Martes, and then giving up a sac fly to Cole Calhoun who was robbed of a hit by Jake Meyers.
But Solomon did not allow another run or hit for the rest of his four innings, getting the win as Astros rookies made a stunning comeback in the bottom of the eighth.
The Astros opened the eighth inning with a Yordan Alvarez walk. With one out, Jose Siri, who replaced Kyle Tucker (shoulder soreness) hit a 423 foot home run to tie the score.
The next batter, rookie Chas McCormick put the Astros ahead with a 417-foot homer.
Ryan Pressly came in for his third straight game and shut down the D-Backs for his 25th save.
This Siri guy has swag.
What the hell. Back in April, we didn’t know if we had three big-league outfielders past Kyle Tucker and Michael Brantley. We traded one away, Myles Straw, and now we’ve got McCormick, Meyers, and this monster Siri. And if you haven’t noticed, Alvarez is playing a competent left field to boot.
The Astros go to LA for a series with the Angels. Framber Valdez faces Jaime Barria at 8:38 CDT.
