New York state’s largest healthcare provider has fired 1,400 employees who refused to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

PIX-11 reports Northwell Health announced Monday that it was parting ways with staff who did not comply with the state’s vaccine mandate for health care workers. The hospitals and clinical network, which operates Lenox Hill hospital in Manhattan, Staten Island University hospital and others, said its 76,000 remaining employees are 100% vaccinated.

“This allows us to continue to provide exceptional care at all of our facilities, without interruption and remain open and fully operational,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “Northwell has taken a rapid, aggressive approach to move successfully toward full vaccination compliance while maintaining continuity of care and ensuring that our high standard of patient safety is not compromised in any way. We thank the vast majority of our employees who did the right thing and got vaccinated.”

According to the New York Post, service for patients at Northwell Health facilities will not be affected, and the company is working to fill the vacancies.

“Northwell believes that having a fully vaccinated workforce is an important measure in our duty to protect the health and safety of our staff, our patients and the communities we serve,” the rep said. “Northwell regrets losing any employee under such circumstances, but as health care professionals and members of the largest health care provider in the state, we understand our unique responsibility to protect the health of our patients and each other. We owe it to our staff, our patients and the communities we serve to be 100 percent vaccinated against COVID-19.

Other hospitals and nursing homes, including Syracuse’s Upstate University Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health, have similarly suspended or laid off any workers who refuse to get vaccinated. They are not eligible for unemployment benefits, according to the state Labor Department.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said last month that she is prepared to call in medically trained National Guard members, retirees and workers outside New York to address any potential staffing shortages through a state of emergency.
