The 49ers finally got out to a hot start with a touchdown on their first offensive series and three sacks in Seattle’s first five series. It wasn’t enough though in a 28-21 49ers loss to their NFC West rival.

Here is what we noticed in each quarter of San Francisco’s latest collapse:

First quarter

– Dontae Johnson and Dre Kirkpatrick got starts at cornerback. Johnson was the nickel corner with K’Waun Williams out. Kirkpatrick is starting for Josh Norman. The first throw of the game went to DK Metcalf who was covered by Emmanuel Moseley. The throw sailed over Metcalf’s head to bring up a punt on Seattle’s first series. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see them go five wide a bunch against this 49ers secondary.

– Jimmy Garoppolo is in a good rhythm to start. He’s being way more decisive than he was against Green Bay and throwing with more accuracy.

– Whew. What a throw from Garoppolo to tight end Ross Dwelley. The big tight end had a corner on him and Garoppolo threw it up and let Dwelley go make a play. That was a terrific drive from the quarterback and a very nice catch by Dwelley. If Garoppolo trusts himself like that it’ll be a good day for the 49ers’ offense.

– Mitch Wishnowsky kicked the extra point, which means Robbie Gould is likely unavailable. That could be big as this game wears on.

– The 49ers’ defense came to play. Kirkpatrick dropped Tyler Lockett for a loss on first down, then Dee Ford came up with a strip sack of Russell Wilson on a third-and-long to force another Seahawks three-and-out. This pass rush might tee off if they keep getting Seattle in third-and-long spots.

– Trey Sermon looks much better vs. Seattle than he did against Green Bay. He’s cutting with a lot more confidence.

– Woof. Bad interception for Garoppolo who telegraphed a throw over the middle that safety Quandre Diggs read the whole way. That’s the kind of thing that happens because the 49ers’ passing offense gets repetitive.

– Nick Bosa’s fourth sack of the year forced another Seattle punt after the interception. He flew around the edge and hit Wilson before he could scramble. The 49ers have a good plan for Wilson so far and he hasn’t looked comfortable even when he has had time to throw.

End of first quarter: 49ers 7, Seahawks 0

– Not a good start to the second quarter. Seahawks LB Jordyn Brooks flew in to sack Garoppolo with very little resistance. It looked like left guard Laken Tomlinson didn’t recognize the blitz and left a wide open hole for Brooks to run through.

– Wishnowsky’s first field goal try is wide right from 41 yards out. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 49ers get more aggressive offensively just outside the red zone.

– Good to see Maurice Hurst back in the lineup for San Francisco. He had a stop for a loss of 2 in his first regular season action of the year.

– Another three-and-out for Seattle. Ford and Javon Kinlaw combined for the 49ers’ third sack of the afternoon. This is dominance in the trenches by San Francisco.

– Good escape by Garoppolo with pressure in his face. He extended the play and threw a nice ball down the field to Brandon Aiyuk. Charlie Woerner was in the area too though and both players got hands on it, but neither caught it.

– Kittle came down awkwardly after a low hit. That’ll be worth watching. He was already dealing with a calf issue.

– Jacques Patrick sighting! He ran for 8 on his first touch as a 49er and made a nice cutback to find the open lane. He plowed ahead for 2 and a first down on his next touch.

– Another three-and-out for the 49ers’ defense. Wilson sailed one behind Metcalf. Moseley had tight coverage again. The Seahawks have -7 yards through five series.

– Garoppolo has cooled off considerably since his red-hot start. His third-and-5 throw to Kittle was well behind the tight end which allowed for a pass breakup and led to a 49ers punt. San Francisco only being up 7-0 despite their dominance in this one is worrisome.

– A beautiful punt by Mitch Wishnowsky would’ve been downed at the 1, but Trenton Cannon dove on it and rolled into the end zone for a touchback.

– Now the Seahawks offense is rolling. Seattle got into second-and-manageable and then a third-and-short and had all day to find DK Metcalf for a 28-yard pickup to put the Seahawks at the 49ers’ 15.

– Azeez Al-Shaair matched up against Metcalf is not a thing that’s probably going to go well for the 49ers very often. Metcalf beat the LB and scored a game-tying touchdown. The fact this game is tied with 1:54 left in the first half is a bad sign for San Francisco.

– Another punt. Garoppolo in the second quarter is 4-11 for 33 yards. This is abysmal.

– It’s Trey Lance to start the second half. His first snap is a handoff to Sermon for 15 yards. He handed off two more times then kept it for a yard on third-and-4 to bring up a punt.

– Garoppolo has a calf issue which explains why it’s Lance.

– Another pass breakup for Moseley on a deep shot to Metcalf. Moseley has done a really nice job today.

– Woof. Lance gets an easy throw off play action to Kittle and stuffs it at the tight end’s feet. That was not good.

– His second throw in traffic to Samuel wasn’t much better. High, into double coverage and a little outside, too. He’s had a couple series to settle in. The third one will be very telling.

– Seattle has gotten their run game going and it opened up their entire offense. It’s been more quick throws from Wilson too to negate some of the pass rush.

– Speaking of the pass rush, Wilson had a 16-yard scramble for a touchdown. There was nobody home on the left side and he cruised in for an easy score. That can’t happen against the Seahawks offense.

– What a disaster for Trenton Cannon. He fumbled the kickoff, picked it up to try and grab a couple yards, then fumbled again. That’s two abhorrent plays for him on special teams.

– Seattle needed two plays to capitalize. Dontae Johnson had him for a sack, but Wilson slipped out of his grasp and found Freddie Swain for a touchdown that could put this one out of reach for an anemic San Francisco offense.

– Now Cannon lets a kick bounce that he thought was going into the end zone, but it landed on the 1 and bounced back toward the 50, so he had to grab it and fall on it at the 11.

– Well that’s one way to get back in it. A bad coverage breakdown for Seattle left Deebo Samuel wide open with nobody around him. Lance lofted it up and Samuel made an easy catch and run for a 76-yard touchdown. Wishnowsky missed the extra point. It’s 21-13. The Gould injury looms large.

End of third quarter: Seahawks 21, 49ers 13

Fourth quarter

– Dee Ford is offsides on a third-down stop for San Francisco to open the final quarter. Seattle gets another crack at it with a third-and-1 and easily picked up the first down. Inexcusable mistake by Ford.

– Pass interference on Kirkpatrick negates another third-down stop. The cornerback just dragged down Tyler Lockett from behind. Another horrible mistake by a veteran.

– One play later the Seahawks score to make it 28-13. That’s a disappointing end to a drive that would’ve twice concluded with a Seattle punt if not for some 49ers miscues.

– Deebo Samuel returned the last Seahawks kick. Cannon’s day appears to be over.

– Lance didn’t fix the offense, it turns out. This is bad. Another three-and-out.

– Nice play by Lance on a fourth-and-1 where he rolled left, had his first read covered, then dodged a pass rusher to complete a throw to Samuel. He had another play extended and looked to have Mohamed Sanu open down the field, but he had the ball slip out of his hand or something.

– Fourth-and-2 handoff to Samuel goes for one yard. That should just about do it. The Lance half was not ideal and leaves a ton of work ahead for San Francisco.

– Lance is having a hard time in the passing game. A lot of waiting and then bailing out of the pocket. It’ll be interesting to see what the offense looks like if he starts against the Cardinals.

– Whew he is incredibly inaccurate. Consecutive throws to Kittle and Samuel weren’t anywhere close.

– A quick throw to Samuel goes for 8 yards and a touchdown with 1:20 left. Lance runs in the two-point conversion and now it’s a 28-21 game. Next week is going to be fascinating.

Final score: Seahawks 28, 49ers 21
