CHICAGO — The mayor’s race could be too close to call Tuesday night — which means Chicagoans could be waiting weeks for a result as mail-in votes trickle in and are counted.
Results Tuesday night show Brandon Johnson, a Cook County commissioner, with a razor-thin lead over former schools CEO Paul Vallas.
Experts have said it could take days — or even weeks — to call the race since there were a record number of vote-by-mail ballots sent out. About 91,000 such ballots were still out by the time polls closed Tuesday, election board spokesman Max Bever said.
Some of those ballots will never come in — while others will trickle in over the next few weeks. They’ll be counted as long as they were postmarked by Tuesday.
But with Johnson and Vallas within a few thousand votes of each other, it could “quite possibly” take up to two weeks to certify final results and for a candidate to feel comfortable conceding, Bever said.
Political consultant Frank Calabrese said Tuesday morning that a dead heat possibly favors Johnson, who performed better with mail-in voters in the Feb. 28 election.
If the two tie, “it will come down to a coin flip. Literally,” Bever said.
The closest mayor’s race in Chicago history was in 1885, when Carter Harrison Sr. defeated Sidney Smith by just 375 votes.
