KINGSVILLE, Texas (February 16, 2020) – The Lubbock Christian baseball team had more hits and fewer errors than Texas A&M-Kingsville, but fell just short in the runs department, losing 8-7 in the series finale on Sunday.
The Chaps (3-7, 3-7) had the lead twice in the game, but the Javelinas (9-1, 9-1) came back each time and held off LCU's last effort at a comeback in the top of the ninth, inducing a flyout with the bases loaded.
LCU took the first lead of the day in the top of the third innings with a bit of two-out magic. George Mendazona started the rally with a triple, and AJ Perez followed with a eight-pitch walk. Larry Leitha then came to the plate and doubled down the left field line, scoring both runners. The double was one of four the Chaps hit on the day, tying their season high.
Texas A&M-Kingsville got all of the runs back and more though, in the bottom half of the inning. Lubbock Christian starting pitcher Logan McCrummen had cruised through the first two innings of play, but the Javelinas got to him in the third, starting with a leadoff single from Damian Rodriguez. TAMUK had the game tied up before McCrummen recorded an out and took the lead on a sacrifice fly from Giancarlo Servin. Two more runs came in after three straight walks, bringing Jaden Fowler into the game in relief. Fowler induced a ground ball for a double play to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Chaps tied the game back up with three runs, two of which were unearned. Mendazona again started the rally, this time with a single, before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A run came in on a sacrifice fly from Luis Navarro, and two more scored after a failed pickoff attempt and a passed ball.
Lubbock Christian took the lead for the second time with a run in the sixth inning. Gavy Perez-Torres led off with a double to right center and came around to score on a one-out single from Peyton Maddox. LCU seemed primed to pour on more runs as Mendazona walked and Perez singled to load the bases with one out, but Leitha popped up and Navarro grounded out to end the threat.
Jaden Folwer and Cade Acery combined in the middle three innings to shut out the Javelinas before making way for Brennen Fowler in the bottom of the seventh. Brennen Fowler faced just two batters, but both of them reached and eventually came around to score, putting TAMUK back on top. Shandon Herrera came in to relieve Brennen Fowler and gave up the eighth and final Javelina run.
Grant Griffin led off the ninth inning with a double and LCU eventually scored a run in the inning when Tate Ellison pinch hit a double down the left field line, giving LCU runners on second and third with just one out. Maddox then flew out, followed by an intentional walk to Mendazona to load the bases, but Perez flew out to end the game.
