In Friday’s ghostly “Come Play,” Gillian Jacobs is a desperate mother trying to protect her young son from an old-fashioned “misunderstood monster” in the house.
Jacobs doesn’t really count herself a horror aficionado but was impressed by writer-director Jacob Chase. “He’s really smart and insightful and I also love,” Jacobs, 38, said, “that the monster would be a puppet and not CGI.”
As to how her tormented mother fares with her lonely little boy, Oliver, “It’s a character who’s certainly going thru a lot,” Jacobs said with a laugh.
Of Azhy Robertson who plays little Oliver, “I felt I was in a scene with another actor, not a kid actor.”
That might be because Jacobs knows what that’s like. “I took my first acting class when I was 8 or 9 years old and immediately fell in love with it.”
Every kid who acts professionally inevitably faces a moment of “This was fun but let’s get real” or accept acting is their life — and it becomes a business.
“That moment happened for me when I arrived at Julliard for the Acting Conservatory. I was used to doing tons of plays in Pittsburgh, where I grew up and everyone liked me. And I got to Julliard and I was not the teacher’s pet, I was on probation! I had to ask, ‘Why do I really love to do this?’ Did I love the affirmation? Or did I love the work?”
She’s been very lucky with the work, including all 110 episodes of “Community” (2009-2015). That six-year-run gave her stability, financial security, recognition.
“I loved it for all of those reasons and because I happened to wind up on a genre-breaking television show that was reinventing itself in every episode. I had a show I can say I loved.”
And she didn’t have to hunt for her next job. “I had the great good fortune to be offered ‘Love’ on Netflix before ‘Community’ ended. I felt that character, Mickey, was such a special one and great fit as an actor.”
This year she’s one of the filmmakers (another is Alison Brie of “Glow”) for the six-episode “Marvel 616” anthology on Disney+.
“It’s on Marvel comics and that was really fun. At this point in my life I enjoy a mixture of directing and acting.
“Mine is all about the women who worked at Marvel over the decades. We have them talking about developing the female characters and their evolution over the years.
“We chart the evolution of Brie Larsen’s character Captain Marvel. It was exciting.”
