Democrats’ obsession with convicting Donald Trump could come with steep price - Boston Herald

Democratic leaders in their frenzy to convict former President Donald Trump could be inadvertently reviving him and his movement.

Trump has essentially become irrelevant since leaving office on Jan. 20, laying low at his Mara Lago resort in Florida. The only ones that seem to care anymore about him are Democratic leaders and talking heads on CNN and MSNBC, who have lived off the Trump phenomenon for years.

But that irrelevancy will end once House Democrats on Tuesday begin their arguments in the former president’s Senate trial.

The impeachment trial starting Tuesday is expected to dominate the headlines for at least two weeks and prevent Democrats in the Senate from doing any other business.

And the end result of the trial isn’t even in doubt — Democrats are expected to fall well short of the two-thirds vote needed to convict.

So what is the point of going through with a trial you know you’re going to lose?

Ask Nancy Pelosi. Or Chuck Schumer. Or Jerry Nadler. Or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her squad.

The only apparent answer is vengeance. Democrats have been obsessed at getting back at Trump since he won the 2016 election.

But their obsession this time may come with a steep price.

First, the trial will essentially prevent President Biden from getting his Cabinet nominees confirmed or passing his $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus plan for at least a few weeks.

Biden is still in his honeymoon period but that won’t last much longer, so losing those critical two weeks to the impeachment trial means he won’t be able to command the public’s attention like a new president should.

And in the longer term, by pushing forward with impeachment, Democrats are risking elevating Trump and making him an even more powerful force for the next few years. In their zeal to drive a stake in Trump’s heart, Democrats could be giving him eternal political life.

While it seems unlikely now, given the serious charges against him resulting from the deadly Capitol riot, Trump could try to make a full-fledged comeback by running again for president in 2024.

But even if he doesn’t run again, Trump will remain a powerful force in the Republican Party for years to come — the essential equivalent of a Chicago ward boss who could anoint the next leader of the party.

If Biden begins to stumble, Trump will likely try to exploit that weakness by resurfacing and reminding voters of how good it was under the former president before COVID-19 hit.

The next election is the mid-term in 2022, and the party in power — in this case Democrats — traditionally have lost seats in Congress. That could be critical because of the slim margin Democrats now hold in the House and the 50-50 split in the Senate.
