Boston Red Sox come back to beat Orioles, 8-6, for fifth straight win; Garrett Whitlock (pectoral tightness) - MassLive.com

BOSTON -- The Red Sox finished off a weekend of beating up on the lowly Orioles with a comeback win Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Boston strung together four straight hits and three runs in the seventh inning to beat the Orioles, 8-6, for the team’s fifth consecutive win. After surrendering the lead on a Trey Mancini bases-clearing double in the seventh, Boston tied the game on a Kiké Hernández RBI single that bounced off second base then took the lead back on a Hunter Renfroe RBI double. Rafael Devers made it a two-run game with a single through the right side.

Boston took an early lead with a three-run first, as Bobby Dalbec walked with the bases loaded and Kevin Plawecki hit an RBI single. After a Hernández RBI double made it 4-0 in the second, the O’s tagged Nathan Eovaldi for three runs in the third to make it a one-run game.

Eovaldi tossed five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Manager Alex Cora pulled him after just 78 pitches and replaced him with Garrett Whitlock, but Whitlock -- after tossing a scoreless sixth -- issued a leadoff walk in the seventh and was removed from the game with right pectoral tightness. Reliever Hirokazu Sawamura then walked the first two batters he faced before Mancini laced a double down the left-field line to give Baltimore a 6-5 lead; the Sox threw out Mancini trying to go to third base for the first out of the inning.

Facing Orioles reliever Conner Greene, the Sox got those runs back in a hurry in the bottom of the seventh. José Iglesias started the string of four straight hits with a leadoff double before Hernández, Renfroe and Devers delivered their RBI knocks.

Hansel Robles pitched a scoreless eighth and Garrett Richards got the save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. The Red Sox improved to 86-65 and gained a game on the Yankees, who lost to Cleveland. Boston remains in possession of the first American League wild-card spot with a one-game lead over the Blue Jays. The Sox’ lead over the Yankees is now 2 ½ games.

Mets up next

The Sox are off Monday, then will welcome the Mets to town for a two-game interleague set starting Tuesday. Here are the pitching probables:

Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET -- LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (11-8, 5.00 ERA) vs. RHP Marcus Stroman (9-12, 2.88 ERA)

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. ET -- TBD vs. RHP Taijuan Walker (7-10, 4.27 ERA)
