Come to Newark for in-person tax help on Saturday, IRS says - NJ.com

With the tax filing deadline of April 18 nearing, people who need help with their returns can get it in person on Saturday, April 9.

The IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) at 20 Washington Place in Newark will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on that day, and you don’t need an appointment.

While representatives won’t be completing tax returns, they will be able to help taxpayers with questions about filing thier returns. That includes issues with opening an online account with the IRS and renewing Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs).

They can also help with the child tax credit, identity theft issues and with questions about refunds and payments due.

“With just a few days until the 2021 tax return filing deadline, IRS TACs will be open on Saturday to help taxpayers who need face-to-face help but can’t get away from work on weekdays,” IRS spokesperson Robert Marvin said. “Appointments are required for help during the week, but people just have to walk-in for assistance April 9.”

Foreign language interpreters will be available, and the IRS will schedule appointments for anyone who needs sign language interpreter services.

Before arriving, the IRS says taxpayers should check the IRS’ Face-to-Face Saturday Help page.

They should bring with them government-issued photo IDs, Social Security cards or ITINs for spouses and dependents, any IRS letters or notices and bank account information to process direct deposits.

The IRS is following Centers for Disease Control social distancing guidelines for COVID and masks will be required.

While tax returns won’t be prepared on site, anyone earning $73,000 or less in 2021 can use IRS Free File at no cost, the IRS said.

If you need free help to prepare your return and you earn less than $58,000, you can find a location at the VITA Locator Tool and those over age 60 can use the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) service, or call (800) 906-9887.
