Woman charged in Mar-a-Lago chase refuses to come to court - CTPost

Updated

The Middletown woman accused of driving her SUV through security checkpoints near Mar-a-Lago refused to appear in court Saturday, according to records from Palm Beach County, Fla.

Hannah Roemhild’s initial appearance has been rescheduled to Monday at 9:00 a.m., a court event form says. The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office has been assigned to transport her, the document indicates.

Roemhild, who the Associated Press reported is a Connecticut opera singer, faces two felony charges of assault on an officer using a deadly weapon, according to the Palm Beach County court case search.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said Roemhild was “obviously impaired” during the Mar-a-Lago incident.

Officials did not think Roemhild had intentionally targeted President Donald Trump’s resort, they said. The president was not present at the resort during the chase, though he was scheduled to appear later Friday.

In the lead-up to the Mar-a-Lago incident, an off-duty Florida Highway Patrol officer who was working security at a local hotel went over to Roemhild’s SUV when he saw she was acting erratically, officials said, adding that Roemhild ignored the officer and drove her car in reverse.

The officer smashed Roemhild’s driver-side window and tried to grab the steering wheel but was unable to prevent her from driving away, according to Bradshaw.

That’s when Roemhild led the officer in a high-speed pursuit, said Major Robert Chandler of the Florida Highway Patrol.

During the chase, Roemhild allegedly dodged security barriers and drove through two checkpoints, placing Secret Service agents and sheriff’s deputies in danger.

Though the agents and deputies opened fire at her vehicle, she managed to keep driving, officials said. Worried that lives could be endangered, the highway patrol officer ended the chase, according to reports.

Law enforcement eventually tracked Roemhild down at a nearby motel, where a trooper tackled her outside her car, according to officials.

Now, Roemhild is due to have her first hearing Monday—if, the judge for her case said, sheriff’s deputies can transport her to the courthouse safely, CBS Miami reported.

In addition to charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, Roemhild faces one count of of resisting an officer without violence and one count of fleeing police, the online booking blotter for the Palm Beach County Sherrif’s Office indicates.

She’s being held at the county’s main detention center, which is in West Palm Beach, according to the blotter.
