As the Coach K retirement news fades out of the spotlight until the 2021-22 college basketball season begins his departure does lead to some interesting discussions. Last week SBNation asked fans to give their choice for “Best Active Coach” when K retires. The top five are listed below and I’d assume Syracuse Orange fans have some thoughts here.

Let’s start at the top where Mark Few and his zero titles are a clear winner ahead of four coaches who all have one. That’s a surprising choice coming off a season where Gonzaga lost to Baylor in the title game but Few has certainly pushed the Zags to one of the top programs in the country. We also learned that Michigan State and Kansas fans must have short memories to have Izzo and Self still in the top 5.

Perhaps even more notable is the lack of several big names. Besides Jim Boeheim we don’t see John Calipari, Rick Pitino or Brad Brownell on this list. Apparently fans want to see more from Scott Drew or Juwan Howard but the question does lend itself to a good discussion topic for an off-season Friday.

Personally I’d leave Wright, Bennett and Few and the final two spots would come from Boeheim, Izzo, Self, and Calipari. Drew, Howard and Chris Beard are pushing that final group but all of them need to show they can continue their success over a longer period. For all the criticism of the older coaches you can’t deny overlook their resumes.
